Waste Management Industry

What happens to my recycled textile & clothing waste?

If textiles and clothing can’t be resold or donated to charity, they tend to end up in a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)

At this stage, fabric waste is separated from the rest, and it goes through one of three main processes depending on its composition:

  • Natural textiles: These are carefully pulled apart into their individual fibres and cleaned. Once that’s done, they’re spun back into yarn, ready to be used in creating new fabrics.
  • Polyester textiles: For polyester recycling, the material is shredded into polyester chips, which are melted down and used to produce new polyester fabrics.
  • Other artificial textiles: Different types of artificial textiles can find new life in various industries and are often used in applications like automobiles.

Once the recycled textiles are prepared, they’re sent to relevant factories or manufacturers for reuse. For example, some textiles may be utilised in the flocking industry, where synthetic and natural fibres are attached to surfaces to fill materials like furniture padding and car insulation.
